White pelicans command this small rocky island in Frank Lake, a Ducks Unlimited conservation area in southern Alberta. After a morning spent fishing and riding the warm spring thermals, they rest and preen in calm indifference to the surrounding cacophony of gulls, shorebirds, and waterfowl. Unbothered and serene, they linger until instinct calls them once more into the spring sky in search of food.
